The first glucometer was launched in 1970, but it was accepted by the masses by 2010. CGMs came into the picture later in 2004 and multiple devices have been launched since then. Among these, Abbott’s freestyle libre dominates the market with multiple partnerships and subscription programs. Various health tech companies like Sugarfit, HealthifyMe, and Ultrahuman provide lifestyle management subscriptions paired with Abbott’s CGM device.The global market share for CGM devices stands at US$ 15B in 2024 with a potential CAGR of 13%, reaching US$ 22M by 2029. The Indian CGM market share is worth US$ 185M in 2024, with a CAGR of 12%, reaching up to US$ 325M in 2029. The current global market leaders include Abbott and Dexcom followed by Medtronic. Similarly in India, Abbott holds the dominant market share followed by Medtronic and Dexcom.


Factors like the increasing prevalence of diabetic and lifestyle disorders, growing awareness for wearable technology, AI-integrated data readings, and growing investments in health-tech companies, are driving the growth of CGM devices. The accessibility of pairing CGMs with insulin auto-injectors and integrating AI for dietary and lifestyle modifications are pushing the boundaries of innovation.However, challenges remain significant. Placement of the wearable device with a microneedle makes it uncomfortable, eventually leading to muscle fatigue. Moreover, the biosensors need to be replaced every 15 days followed by reapplication and repetition of the entire process. The system works with NFC-enabled smartphones and requires setting alerts per convenience, making it complicated for the population aged over 50 years. The entire setup cost starts around 3-5000 with sensors costing around 5,000 which need to be replaced every 15 days. Currently, without insurance support, the setup is expensive making it inaccessible for the majority of pthe opulation in India.In recent years, CGM devices have faced several challenges, leading to recalls and regulatory actions. Issues have included immune-related adverse reactions to adhesive materials, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and malfunctioning sensors. Some devices were recalled due to risks of overheating and fire when improperly charged, while others were flagged for inaccurate glucose readings, prompting free replacements. Insulin pump systems have faced technical issues such as loose retainer rings, shorter battery life, and improper fitting, leading to device replacements and user advisories. Even with advancements like year-long CGM systems, connectivity and reliability concerns persist. These challenges highlight the need for enhanced safety measures, robust regulatory oversight, and continued innovation in CGM technology.
